I normally try not to be political in my posts. I believe that you can be humanist and of any political leaning. However, I feel the need to call out specific behavior that is antithetical to humanist principles. Particularly, in this case, I want to refer to the recently revived bill HB 0892 the so called “Defense of Marriage Act”. Sponsored by Mark Pody (R), this bill declares that this law considers marriage a one man, one woman institution and that they can ignore the Supreme Court ruling Obergefell v. Hodges.
I think we all know this is a bunch of malarkey. We have someone in a position of power who wants to deny equality to people they don’t like. No matter how many whereas clauses you want to put in your bill, there is no getting around the fact that you are violating the equal protection clause of the US Constitution.
I know there are people out there who do not like the idea that people can marry whomever they like and you’re entitled to that opinion. However, you cannot legally discriminate against people who you don’t approve of. If you live in Tennessee, this bill is a waste of your tax dollars on useless posturing that will be overturned. In the meantime, there will likely be economic ramifications as companies decide to start doing business elsewhere rather than have to deal with discriminatory laws here. We saw the same kind of thing happen when the state of North Carolina tried to pass a very restrictive transgender bathroom law. Companies, events, and sports teams started making known they would rather take their business elsewhere and the law looks like it may be repealed.
If you do not want this bill to pass, make your voice heard. Do not let this bill pass quietly. Call your representatives, tell them what you think. Let them all know this behavior is not acceptable and we need to put a stop to this before it starts. Equal protection under the law means everyone gets the same rights and responsibilities whether you agree with their life choices or not.
